The GWK Pup Purchase Process

At Gone with the Wind Kennels we have a purchase process that is similar to other rescue groups in how our dogs are purchased. Below is an explanation of this process and why.

Once you see the pet you are interested in off our website or select out of our females with planned breeding, you fill out an application, which is forwarded to us directly. After reviewing the application, a veterinarian check is done, followed by a phone interview with you, the applicant. Finally, a home check (with appropriate documentation) is done, followed by arrangement to see your selected pet at our location and final arrangement for delivery and transfer of ownership.

During this process we require a retainer for your selected pup and a signed contract. Should during this process either party decide to cancel in the first 10 days of commencement then the retainer is refunded. Payment in full is required upon official acceptance of you as the pups permanent owners.

Please note: We do not accept anyone purchasing a dog for another without that person partaking in the process. We do not accept anyone whose residency is in flux we require stable homes for our babies. We understand that everyone’s situation can change due to circumstances and all GWK sport retrievers must be returned immediately. Even if it is temporary we will arrange foster care for 1 to 2 months for a fee if the fee or after expiry of term the fostered dog will be adopted out to a new family.

Common questions:

1. Why do I need to fill out an application? The application gives you the opportunity to tell us about yourself, your family, and your home.

2. Why is a vet check done? Vaccinations, yearly check ups, heartworm prevention, all of these are important to the good health of your dog. A vet check tells us that you care about the continued good health of your new family member.

3. Why is a phone interview necessary? The application is your chance to begin telling us about yourself. The phone interview is our opportunity for us to tell you about ourselves, and more importantly, for us to tell you about the dog you are interested in and what you can expect from the dog. This is your opportunity to ask questions that you feel are important about GWK Kennels and the dogs. When going through the process, we match the needs of the dog up with the home which can best meet those needs.

4. Why do I have to provide a land title/ lease agreement along with landlord statement? It is important to validate security and stability of residency for home owners as this is the ideal situation for a new family member. For renters we need to ensure landlords approve as well as the tenancy is long term for the same stability as a home owner and security for the new pet. It is also a requirement that GWK is notified of moves and location as we are tracking all planned breeding of our pups, from health, updates, progress and if required to be the first line of contact should the pup need to be returned due to circumstances

5. Why does my home need checking or I have to provide photos? It’s not that we don’t trust you-we simply want to verify that you do indeed live in the home that your application says you do and to make sure that your home is appropriate for the dog you want to purchase. We aren’t doing a home check to see if you are the number one housecleaner just that the dog will have a safe, secure and stable home.

6. I live outside the local area for a home check, why do I have to arrange a SPCA representative to visit and provide a statement? It’s not that we don’t trust you-we simply want to verify that you do indeed live in the home your application says you do and to make sure that your home is appropriate for the dog you want to purchase. We aren’t doing a home check to see if you are the number one housecleaner just that the dog will have a safe, secure and stable home.

7. Why do I have to have a letter from my lender or provide an Equifax report? It’s not that we want to perform a credit check we simply want to ensure that you have the financial wherewithal to afford the daily costs associated with pet ownership as well as potential emergency or health upkeep costs. When times are tight as we hear too often in the news that pet owners feed themselves yet choose not to feed their four legged family members. We understand that at times everyone can go through trying times and in that situation we require all GWK animals are returned prior to a situation of choice of not providing correct care of our animals.

8. Ok- I have never owned a dog before or a pet but why so many references from a business associate, friend, employer, immediate family, vet, dog trainer, dog food supplier and doggie daycare? Ownership of a pet is something not to be taken lightly. We want to see that you fully understand the obligation and responsibility that is required to care for the dog. We also want to see that there is outside awareness of your choice or desire including support during the transition of ownership and continued care. It is somewhat like having a new baby there is a lot to learn, know and perhaps at times can be simply overwhelming. Your daily habits and environment will impact your new arrival either positively or negatively. We are focused on simply what is in the best interests of our dogs. We do register with your local pound & city bylaw and SPCA that should your dog end up in either of their facilities and we will have dog is returned to our care & ownership in this situation.
